Unfortunately, the crowd swelled beyond the anticipated numbers. Over 2.5 lakh fans flooded the streets, far exceeding the capacity that the local police and organizers could manage.

Tragic Stampede During the Parade

Almost immediately after the team arrived at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium for a victory ceremony, chaos erupted outside. A massive, tightly packed crowd surged toward the stadium’s entrance. Without sufficient barricades or crowd control, people were crushed in a sudden stampede. According to news reports, 11 people were killed and about 47–50 injured when the parade turned deadly. (Karnataka officials initially reported 11 dead and 33 injured, and later counts varied by source.) Many victims were young fans crushed against stadium gates. This shocking turn of events overshadowed the celebration and cast a pall over what should have been a triumphant homecoming for RCB,

  • “What happened at Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru, is beyond tragic,” tweeted cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar, offering his condolences to the bereaved families

  • Aakash Chopra, former India opener, wrote that he was “speechless” and “numb” to hear that a victory parade had “claimed innocent lives”

  • Harbhajan Singh also expressed heartbreak, calling the stampede a “dark shadow over the spirit of the game”

State authorities immediately reacted. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said an estimated 2–3 lakh people had gathered, much more than expected. He announced ₹10 lakh (about $12,000) in compensation for each victim’s family and ordered a magisterial probe.

The IPL’s governing body (BCCI) and local police criticized the event’s planning. IPL chairman Arun Dhumal noted that the victory celebration was not a BCCI event and said organizers should have planned RCB’s IPL-winning celebrations better”, RCB’s official statement (shared publicly by Kohli) said the team was “deeply anguished” and that organizers had “amended our program” as soon as they learned of the chaos sports.ndtv.com. The RCB statement urged all supporters to “stay safe” and expressed condolences to the victims,

Death Toll and Injuries

As per the latest reports, the death toll has reached 16, with over 75 injured. Several of the injured are in critical condition, and hospitals across Bengaluru are on high alert. The majority of the victims were young fans, many of whom had traveled from nearby towns to witness the celebrations.

Supportive Voices and Counter-Reactions

Not all reactions were negative. Loyal RCB supporters and some commentators pushed back against blaming Kohli. Within hours of #ArrestKohli trending, fans launched a #WeLoveYouKohli campaign on X. Over 150,000 posts by Friday morning expressed solidarity and affection for Kohli Many argued he could not have foreseen the stampede or controlled the crowds.

Other fans highlighted that Kohli publicly expressed remorse. Kohli shared RCB’s official statement on social media and wrote, “At a loss for words… absolutely gutted.”  His wife, actress Anushka Sharma, also posted condolences, showing grief over the loss of life.

In the days after, several comments argued it was unfair to single out Kohli. Users recalled how movie star Allu Arjun went personally to visit victims’ families after a recent stampede at a film event, contrasting that with complaints that Kohli had not done so. (However, supporters countered that Kohli had canceled another event and donated to relief funds, and was scheduled to meet with officials.) On forums and cricket groups, many wrote that responsibility lay with the event planners and local authorities, not with the players.

Virat Kohli himself issued a heartfelt statement :

I am devastated by what happened during the victory parade. My heart goes out to the families of those who lost their lives. We wanted to share joy, not sorrow. I urge everyone to stay calm and support the victims and their families.

Despite his statement, the online outrage continued, with “#ArrestKohli” remaining among the top 3 trends on Twitter for over 24 hours.

Casualties and Official Action

  • Bengaluru Police filed an FIR (First Information Report) naming RCB management, event firm DNA Entertainment, and officials of the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) as accused in negligence of public safety.

  • Four officials — including RCB’s social-media manager and others from DNA Entertainment — were taken into custody by police.

  • An unrelated petition by a social activist (A.M. Venkatesh) led to a police complaint against Virat Kohli himself. That complaint has been accepted for investigation alongside the existing FIR.(As of now, no charges have been proven or arrests made against Kohli.)

  • Investigators cited sections of the new Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita including culpable homicide not amounting to murder, unlawful assembly, and negligence..

The Rise of #ArrestKohli on Twitter

Amid the outrage, a hashtag began trending on Twitter: #ArrestKohli. The argument from certain sections of the public is that Virat Kohli, being the central figure of the parade and the one who called fans to join the celebration through his social media, should take moral responsibility for the tragedy.

  • “He invited fans and now 16 are dead. #ArrestKohli”
  • “No crowd management, no responsibility. Fame comes with accountability. #ArrestKohli”
  • “A parade without proper planning is criminal negligence. #ArrestKohli”

While many criticized this trend as misplaced anger, others felt it was a way to highlight the larger issue of celebrity accountability.

Commentators and Big Players React

The cricketing world reacted strongly to both the tragedy and the “#ArrestKohli” trend.

  • Harsha Bhogle, noted commentator, tweeted: “Heartbroken to hear about the tragedy in Bengaluru. Let’s channel our energy towards helping the victims, not vilifying individuals.”

  • Sachin Tendulkar posted: “A celebration turned into sorrow. My prayers are with the families. This is not the time for blame games.”

  • AB de Villiers, Kohli’s close friend, expressed his sadness and defended Kohli, saying: “Virat would never want something like this to happen. Let’s stand together and support the victims.”

Several other players, including MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma, called for an independent investigation but cautioned against targeting individual players.

Conclusion: A Lesson in Accountability and Planning

The “#ArrestKohli” trend reflects the raw emotions of a grieving public but also raises questions about accountability. While it is unfair to pin the blame solely on a player who did not organize the event, the incident highlights the need for better planning and crowd management during public celebrations.

As the cricketing community and the nation mourn the lives lost, it is crucial to focus on ensuring such tragedies are never repeated. Responsible organizing, clear communication, and strict safety measures must become the norm for any large public event.

RCB’s historic win will always be remembered, but sadly, so will the tragic events that followed. The hope now is for healing, justice, and a commitment to making public celebrations safe for all.
